Engine Modifications

While it is currently standard in the mechanicals, my car will soon be under-going some modifications to extract more power from its3lt turbo-charged 7MGTE motor. Current plans are to Dyno the car as standard to get a base-line hp figure and then improve from there. The factory quotes the power from these engines as230 - 240 hp @ 4.5 - 5.5 psi boost. These figures vary depending on year of manufacture and whether the car was auto (4.5psi) or manual  (5.5psi). Since mine is an auto, it should put out around170hp at the wheels, which sounds nice for a stock car till you realise it weighs in at a rather hefty 1475kgs. 

Suspension for the car was originally an air-bag suspended, adjustable factory set-up, but that has now been removed along with the compressor which supplied the required air to work the system. In its place now reside Cusco height adjustable coil-over shocks with gas pressurised cartridges. These were originally from the 30 series Soarers but I have modified the rears to fit, while the fronts bolted straight in. Wheels have also been changed to something a little better then stock, with 18" x 10" Zepter Ligare mesh wheels filling the rear guards, and 18" x 9" rims looking after steering duties up front. These have been wrapped in 285-30-18 Yokohama A-008P tyres rear and 255-35-18 Falken GRBs front. No major body modifications have had to be done to get clearance for these sizes as the off-set of the rims were carefully measured to avoid any of these common problems. The best part is that with the current revised laws in my home state, these wheels are fully road legal.

Braking at this point will be limited to the installation of cross-drilled rotors from the MA71 Supra turbo, which are available for purchase over the net from www.discpads.com.au  .  Perhaps at a later stage a better system will be installed, but at the moment I will trust in the up-graded standard system with the factory ABS control.

My initial aims for the engine are fairly moderate, consisting of achieving a solid 350hp at the wheels, using a single turbo system, and only 15 psi boost. The reasons are fairly simple, as this will allow me entry to the horsepower heroes at the Canberra SummerNats. Summernats rules limit all forced-induction engines to run a maximum of 15 psi boost so all engines are on a strictly controlled playing field.

Engine modifications will consist of the following, unless something better pops up instead. The standard exhaust manifold will be ported and cleaned up to facilitate flow, as the internal surface is very restrictive due to the lumps cast in it for the studs that secure the heat shields. The CT26 turbo will probably be  retained and high-flowed using a Garret TO4 60-1 compressor wheel and housing, which I am led to believe will be a relatively easy adaptation to the standard Toyota body. The exhaust has been replaced right from the turbo itself , doing away with the restrictive bend which Toyota fitted to house the oxygen sensor and for the mufflers I have fitted the Dynomax RaceMagnums as they have performed well in tests done by an Australian magazine . A 65mm throttle plate will be used in the original throttle body, so as to retain the factory position sensor and ancillary equipment. Up-graded intercooler and plumbing with the capability of handling the requirements will be installed along with higher flowing injectors. For the sake of experimentation the factory inlet manifold and plenum will be cut open and the plenum volume increased along with bell-mouth entrances to the intake runners. At this stage the engine will be mostly left alone, and un-opened until a later stage in the development with the exception being the fitment of a set of Vernier Cam-Gears. The air-cleaner is set to be a unit made by HKS, being a Super Power Flow unit supplied by Osaka Motor-sports at Slacks Creek. 

All the modifications will be done using budget techniques so as to keep the end cost to a minimum. This is not to say that corners will be cut, but that the route of the big dollar unit will not be taken if there is an alternative which will perform to the same level.
